A New Chapter

I apologize for the title, I could only think of cliches. So I decided to go with the corniest one possible.

I want to updated all the loyal readers inside our great online community, that there are some big changes currently happening in the Crane household.

My wife is pregnant and we are expecting our first child (a girl) in February. This alone is very exciting, but we also decided it was time for us to move from our downtown San Diego condo. We really enjoy living within walking distance to a lot of great places, but the thought of a crazy person on the street waking up my daughter in the middle of the night after I just got her to sleep would drive me crazy. We decided to sell the condo and are currently in escrow for a house in University City area (Central San Diego). The house is an original 1972 work of art. I have quite a bit of work to do in the upcoming months (and forever).

The good news (for brewing) is that I will be moving my brewing from a 30 sq ft balcony and 25 sq ft closest to a 2 car garage. I will now have much more room for fermentation space. Get ready for barrel projects, more experiments and finally my home lab setup for isolating yeast and bacteria.

The brewing and blog writing might be slow over the next few months, but I already have a few new posts in the works.

    1. Thanks.

I already got a bunch of information from you and DC Yeast Lab. I bought supplies last June for my birthday and realized I need more space to do it right.

I have pipettes, 15 ml vials, 50 ml vials, 125 ml flasks, 1L liter flasks, inoculation loop, alcohol lamp, petri dishes, brilliant green. I have the stuff, but I'm sure I'll be asking you a lot of questions once I start.

  2. Brewing with children is a whole new ballgame, as is brewing with some more space to move around. In the same way that people seem to spend more money when they make more, I imagine that you'll fill that 2 car garage with brewing equipment and such in no time.

With daddy business cropping up often, I've found my brewing relegated to unconventional time periods and constricted by previously unheard of restraints. Soon you too will know the joy of starting a brew at 10PM on a Tuesday evening with work the next morning...

One of the obvious advantages to having children and being a brewer is that you'll undoubtedly need to drink more to ensure your sanity and beer will be available, cheap, and delicious. Welcome to the club.

    1. Thanks man for the great insight. I don't doubt any of it and the craziest part is that I'm pretty excited about it.

  3. Right behind you, we are expecting our 2nd in March, also a girl! Congratulations on the new house. More space is huge. Plan ahead for a good work flow. You will soon become a master of efficiency. My little boy likes to scrub brew kettles at the moment and readily de-gasses airlocks. He can give you a tour, showing you the grain, hops, and the carboys for beer and wine. Perhaps you will also gain a little helper!

    1. Awesome Sean, I'm very excited for you both. I see some play date / brew sessions in our future.

When the house gets put together a bit more I'll have you over for some "consulting" on brewery layout.
